Although people are now using 30% less plastic carrier bags than before it's still not close enough to getting rid of plastic from the environment. Even the biodegradable plastic bags take about a year to degrade. What happens to them during that time. They might end up the in the stomach of a turtle.
Governments still aren't learning about how to properly dispose of our waste. Plastic bottles and such like are being dumped out in the middle of oceans only for them to be washed up on shorelines potentially thousands of miles away. There was a clear-up of beaches in Scotland where they found plastic bottle all the way from Japan!
I think that manufacturers of goods could do a lot more to help. I mean you can get sweets wrapped in plastic which is then placed in a plastic bag, which is then placed in a cardboard box which is then wrapped in plastic. Do we seriously need so much packaging?!
I remember as a kid buying some toy that came in a big box only to be really disappointed by the fact that the toy only took up a small percentage of the box. Things are a little better now but not enough. Even recycling has it's problems due to all the chemicals needed etc.
