I think the biggest culprit in my home for wasted food is my dog. She is a really fussy eater and has never exactly been food-orientated. So often we end up having to throw her food out as it could potentially make her ill if she ended up eating it after all those hours sitting around.
In terms of other kitchen waste we have been composting for a couple of years now and it's great. It's something that I've wanted to do ever since I was a kid but we never had the space to do so. I was a little bit worried that there would be a nasty smell from the compost but it hasn't been that bad at all. For a while we had problems with flies but that was solved by adding in more paper and cardboard. We've also had worms breeding in the compost which can only be a good thing too.
Although when it comes to composting lawn clipping we've had to let our local council deal with that because we simply produce too much for us to handle ourselves.
If you have the space, I would certainly recommend that you start composting today. Buying a compost isn't all that expensive either and after a year or so you'll end up with great stuff to put on your soil and that will make your plants very happy indeed.
